Shaken Baby Syndrome

Babies are Fragile. Please don’t shake a child.
How vigorous is vigorous? Not very much when it’s a baby’s head. Shaken baby syndrome occurs when a baby is vigorously shaken. The head moves back and forth and the sudden whiplash motion causes bleeding inside the head and increased pressure on the baby’s fragile brain, causing the brain to pull apart. The poorly developed muscles of a baby’s neck are just not equipped to prevent injury from shaking. The only effective prevention is NEVER SHAKE A BABY.
The number one reason for shaking a baby is inconsolable crying. Almost 25% of all babies with Shaken Baby Syndrome die. Between 20 and 50 per cent of parents and caretakers aren’t aware of the effects of shaking a baby.
Sugar Land Exchange Club volunteers teach in the school Health Class about Shaken Baby Syndrome, how it happens and what to do when frustration drives you to shaking a baby. Targeting middle school children teaches kids prior to baby sitting age the facts of shaking a baby and in high schools, there is a refresher for young parents to be.
